Is it a health advantage? > Hi Barb, I have been talking about this for several years and don't want to bore everyone with repeating myself, but I will try to summarize..... Many years ago another breeder mentioned he did not want his pet puppies to be spayed or neutered. He mentioned he had been to a seminar in England and believed what he learned there....that it was not in their best health interest to have it done. I spent a great deal of time researching and speaking to breeders and vets (with no vested interest) and I am convinced that we have been brainwashed in this country by the "vet union"....the same one that warns you how irresponsible you are if you don't give yearly vaccinations. It goes like this....If a vet makes $100,000 a year on yearly vaccinations and he tells you need to have it done every 3 years, his income is now $33,000. If he makes $50,000 a year on spaying and neutering puppies that goes down to $0. It is illegal to spay and neuter in Sweden. It is uncommon in much of Europe. Why are we different. The line is that you prevent testicular cancer in males. How many Cavaliers do you know who have died from testicular cancer? I believe that over-vaccination is what compomises their immune system and makes them succeptible to cancer, epilepsy, leukemia, etc. I believe in a raw diet and the health benefits it affords. Why do vets urge you to get your puppy spayed or neutered young? My opinion.....many people switch vets easily, especially when just starting with one. If he has you now - he may not have you when your puppy is a year old. So their policy is to get that puppy before you lose the owner to another vet. I have tried to convince those ethical breeders who believe they are doing the right thing by restricted pedigrees that there is a better method. There are some in the CKCSC who are calling my contractual provisions "Lasser's Law" and have asked me to write it out and send it to the Bulletin but I have not done so because I have no desire to spend any more time defending myself than necessary. However, this is my "protocol'" and my reasons are as follows: I know without a doubt that a resticted pedigree will no sooner stop an unethical person from breeding a litter than I expect the importers to stop telling buyers they don't need to have their puppies health checked because they are from Europe. They just don't care whether they have AKC or CKCSC papers and would be just as happy to have an official looking document from the Clean Plate Club, USA. I used to sell all my puppies on a co-ownership so I could control what they did with MY puppies (they are mine as long as they carry the Welmforth kennel name....as are all the puppies that follow.) Then I decided that I did not want to be legally responsible for someone else's dog and came up with this policy almost 4 years ago and have been very happy with it. My contract say the following: "Any puppies that result from a breeding, not authorized by me in writing is a breech of this contract. For each and every puppy, whether sold or given away, the purchaser owes Phyllis Lasser the sum of $3,000 per puppy." My purpose is to stop any thought of breeding and certainly to discourage any unethical person from taking the change and buying a puppy from me. A restricted pedigree may or may not hold up in court. I don't think most judges care about the politics of pedigree types. What I have is a legal document...a contract. What I have done is protect my name as well as protect the puppy I am selling from falling into the wrong hands. I have spoken about my contracts on this list before, as well as talking about it at a breeders seminar at least 2 years ago and I am honestly astounded that so few people have shown an interest in following my lead and have continued to rely on restricted pedigrees to protect this breed. Well Barb, you did ask for my opinion.
