Hi Cathy,
I am very fortunate to live in an area where there is a high demand for
Cavaliers, I can pick and choose puppy buyers easily. I know not everyone
is that fortunate. Therefore, and just for that reason, I do not sell
puppies to strangers that live more than an hour away from me.
It truly is a small world and people with Cavaliers or those looking for one
talk to everyone remotely connected to a Cavalier. Last week I got a call
from a friend (with 2 of my dogs) who asked if a family with 11 year old
twins and a Pekinese was at my house. She heard from someone who bought a
puppy from her that she had run into someone at a restaurant who heard her
talking about her dog and that person had a friend who visited a breeder in
Wyckoff. Also, I keep very close contact with most of my puppy buyers, even
if it is only 2 or 3 times a year.
If you sell to someone who lives somewhat nearby and you meet the whole
family (I must meet ALL the family members) and have them come visit at least
2 times before taking the puppy....you have a fairly good chance of being
able to make an educated assessment of the character of the people. Yes, I
did get burned once by someone who came highly recommended by a previous
puppy buyer and this was her childhood friend. Interestingly, I trusted the
first buyer and was wrong to have done so. When dealing with strangers and
making my own assessment I have not made any mistakes, so far. But the point
is this....even if I did and someone bred a litter. Don't you think the
chances are fairly good that at some point I would hear of someone with a dog
from a breeder that turned out to be this unethical individual with my dog.
I believe that an unethical person would not bother with me but move on to
someone else. That is my purpose in coming up with such an idea.
Phyllis
