Genetics do always enter into it, but I have seen a coat change on ALL my
Cavaliers--once neutered. Sometimes the change is minimal and the coat
still looks pretty *normal*. Other times the coat changes are more. But
they have all changed to some extent. My Prudence and Winnie both have/had
straight, gorgeous silky coats even after spaying--but I can honestly say it
still is not exactly the same as before they were spayed. Still more
length, a slight bit more volume.

As for colors--I don't think it means anything at all. Still just genetics.
In my house the whiter dogs tend to get the fuzzier coats and the dogs with
more color do not change as much--but the 3 whiter coated dogs are all
pretty closely related--mother, daughter, niece.
