Actually Cindy I personally think that what is in or not in water as the
case may be can effect pigment.
I had never had any problems with pigment for many years until I moved to
Wales and I noticed that all the dogs pigment went slightly "off" - they
were just not the dense black that I took for granted - they were being fed
exactly the same as before - I moved in summer and the only thing that was
different was the water. They are all back to "normal" again now but I am
convinced it was the change in water that caused the problem
