I don't think anyone expects a pet owner or the general public to be familiar with every breed. However, it is not unreasonable to expect that someone know the actual name of the breed that they wish to share the next 10-15 years of their life with especially if they are calling around and want one right now. I mean, I know squat about cars except how to drive one (although my husband wouldn't agree there ;-)) But if I was out looking to buy a car today, I imagine that I'd know enough as to the kind I want. I wouldn't call the dealer asking for a Nissan Century, Toyota Camera or Ford Exploder.
