Rosanne this is probably the first time I've disagreed with you but since
the incident we're talking about was so *appalling* I have to put in my 2
cents. I do first want to make it clear that I'm in no way flaming you or
anyone else on this list who has expressed a different opinion. And I have
no interest in criticizing anyone who was involved in this *by name* -- with
the possible exeption of Bob Hochberg, who should have known better and
should have had enough of a sense of responsibility to the Club as a whole
(not to mention his own committee!!) - to know something about the
organization for which he - in the name of the Club's Ethics committee - was
asking members to send petitions and donations.
To characterize what happened as an "innocent gesture" runs the risk of
encouraging a grave injustice to breeders and dogs everywhere in the US.
(By the way, I'm not a breeder but even I knew about the DDAL!) As a Club
member I can say that I have the right to trust in the accuracy of what the
Club communicates to its members in an *official* Club publication. And
anyone connected with an official Club publication has a responsibility to
ensure this to the best of their ability - if this requires doing a bit of
due diligence before publishing something, so be it. If they do not, the
result cannot be characterized as "innocent." Was it deliberate? NO, I'm
sure it was not. Was it *ignorant* and *irresponsible*? Evidently.
I hope that what happened will not end in simply publishing an explanation,
apology or whatever in the next issue of the Bulletin, but will produce
something positive for the future: namely, a revision of current policies,
leading to improved editorial control and accountability.
Thanks,
Alida
<<< I must say that Jan Wendell always prints what Bob Hochberg sends her
(make that past tense). There are many of us in the club, who knew nothing
about DDAL, and Jan
is included. She surely does not pass the content of the newsletter in
front of the ethics committee, either, unless it is something she personally
questions. Let's face it, the article looked totally innocent unless you
had knowledge of the DDAL. This was an innocent gesture by Bob Hochberg, by
Jan Wendell, etc. I think it is time to put it to bed. >>>
