Suze, This is not true at all, at least not in many professional
organizations. I'm sure what you say is true for some groups, though, and
come to think of it, maybe my mistake is in expecting the same of all. One
of my colleagues is the editor (for over 25 years) of one of (my field's)
most respected professional journals -- in the world. This takes an
enormous amount of work, and he does ALL of it as a volunteer. I agree, and
he would too, that he deserves big bucks for this, since the journal does
indeed meet "higher publishing standards." He's far from rich and yet he
does it all for free, as part of his great commitment to the field.

I have never suggested that those connected with the Bulletin are doing
*less* than a remarkable job. Does anyone really think that the *policies*
within which they work can't be improved?? Once again, I am trying (though
it seems futile) to keep this from being about them personally, and
suggesting that tightening up policies should NOT be taken as a criticism of
anyone personally. I make a distinction between persons and policies; if
someone can't do that, well...

However, there was a suggestion that there should be

 > "improved editorial control and accountability"

with which I am not sure I agree. This is not the NY Times or WSJ. A
purely volunteer staff who do a remarkable job shouldn't be blamed for
submissions. This is *not* a legal opinion, but a personal opinon based
on the fact that if you want to hold someone to "higher publishing
standards", you will have to pay them big bucks and hire legal staff to
"clear" articles.

So, perhaps Barb and Jan should be highly paid editors and should have a
staff of ten to help them out? <G> I'm all for that; they surely
deserve it.

However, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the fiduciary
responsibility of an attorney/Ethics Chair.

Suze
