Barb H., Maybe I wasn't clear enough, since I gather you missed the point of
why I did not mention names other than Bob Hochberg. The point was to TRY
to keep this thread from deteriorating into personal defensiveness, and
instead to suggest that there is something very positive that can result
(improved editorial control and accountability, as I specified in my last
paragraph)-but this can ONLY occur if people look beyond individual
involvement, in order to take a constructive look at larger issues.

And Barb, come on-OF COURSE you (and others) don't "want" to see mistakes -
as I wrote, I'm sure it was NOT deliberate. The answer to your other
questions is a resounding YES - I most certainly do know what an enormous
number of hours every week (usually thankless) goes into running an
organization and closely overseeing publications. For the past *10 years* I
have lived with this. (My husband recently completed - thank heaven! -- his
2nd term as president of a professional association, nationwide, and I
continue to co-manage its website.) We do ALL of this work as volunteers.
(And we take our *accountability* to the membership, and our efforts to
continually improve our policies, just as seriously as we would if we were
being paid for it.) So I certainly do know what's involved. That's why I
also know that if any problem occurs, the most responsible way to proceed is
(1) acknowledge the problem; (2) determine how it occurred (not just "who");
(3) set aside personal defensiveness; (4) learn from it in order to ensure
that it can't happen again. This means reviewing and changing policies or
practices. NOTE: I have been talking about improving HOW things are done,
not "who" does them. I don't know how else to get this across!

I'm sorry that you, Barb (who I continue to have great respect for) are
upset by my post. As you know, a lot of us (you too, I'd guess) have been
distressed by what happened. I don't think it's productive to get
sidetracked into *personal* defenses of anyone. Nor do I think it solves
anything to say "things slip through" unless one ALSO says, "And we're now
doing everything possible to close the size of those cracks."

<<<YIKES
As editor of the yearbook for 12 years I get real taken aback at some of
these comments. I assume I am lumped in the above comments as you mention
all
official publications. Do you REALLY think Jan (Bulletin editor) and I want
to see mistakes in what we print? Do you know Jan has done her job for free
for at least 8 years? Do you know how many hours go into making sure that we
proof and proof again? Do you know how much information is provided to us
for
each edition by outside sources - those we rely on to make things flow? Jan
has volunteers who proof and I have volunteers who proof - but you know what
- things slip through.

I am trying to get my blood pressure back down now :o)
