Dear fellow Cavalier lovers, I am a classic lurker on this list but I have great respect for those of you who are willing to share your expertise with those of us just entering the wonderful world of Cavaliers. I have emailed several of you privately and truly appreciate the help and generosity you have given me in raising my four cavaliers. I can't continue, however, to lurk after some of the last postings. Some time ago a reference was made to a breeder who put a newborn puppy in the freezer. When I saw the name of the breeder and realized I knew the person I had to find out if it was just an ugly rumor. I did what I teach my students to do: I went to the person and asked out right whether it was true or not. She told me the newborn was in a lot of pain and distress from the beginning and took the newborn to her vet right away. The vet was not positive but believed it was the tear ducts so the breeder then took the newborn to an ophthalmologist. The tear ducts in neither eye were functioning and the puppy was in great pain. 3 different medications were prescribed but the doctor told her that if relief was not effective in a week she had to think about putting the newborn to sleep. The newborn had stopped eating and was being kept alive by tube feeding. At the end of the week the medications had done nothing and the newborn's eyes were ulcerating badly. The newborn was still crying constantly. The vet was called and the vet technician consulted with the vet and told the breeder how to painlessly put the newborn to sleep which she did. Another breeder, a friend, was with her. The newborn was put in the freezer ONLY AFTER it was deceased and that was just to keep it until it could be disposed of as any newborn puppy that died would have been. I recently confirmed her version of the incident with the doctor but did not bring these facts to the list because the moderator, very fairly, asked that all references to this breeder be discontinued as the breeder was no longer on the list to defend herself. After people still kept referring to the story, I felt I should bring the truth to the list. I am not a breeder but I would think any reputable breeder would have put down a newborn who was suffering so much when the doctor said there was nothing he could do. I have a friend who is going through this now with a Cavalier that has no tear ducts functioning in one eye and 60% use in the other. Because the dog is 10 months old, they can do surgery on this dog but it has suffered a lot of pain. I have nothing to gain from sharing this truth, nor do I want to criticize those who started the rumor as I'm sure nobody on this forum would publish anything they did not believe to be true. Can't we all just please try to find out the truth behind stories like this before we publish them on this list of people who are so obviously dedicated to the well being of Cavaliers? All the people had to do was do just as I did - go to the source and then check out the facts.
