Hi, Charlotte,
Well, I do think this IS true. Those who buy from breeders who are
unethical, uncaring, uneducated or unlucky DO push back. Those unhappy
buyers come back to demand some help with their difficulties. Ethical
breeders will always take back their puppies. Not all of us guarantee
for health (I won't; long discussion on that some other time) but all of
us will take back the puppy and rehome or keep him/her. I will always
be there for the life of any puppy that I place, and help in any way
that I can if something does go wrong. (People who have bought pets
from me are wonderful; we are in touch frequently and it is great fun to
hear stories of their antics and foibles as they grow up. I have a
small mailing list and send out suggestions for health, training and
care when new things come to my attention.)
Those who are not so ethical pay in legal fees because they DO get sued,
reported to authorities and such. It simply doesn't pay well to do
things wrong. (It doesn't pay at all to do things right in breeding
which is why I said that breeding is "counter-intuitive"; you must want
to do it for love and not money.)
Before you all start screaming about pet mills making money, I want to
point out how much they have to pay for lobbies, legal fees, PAC money,
and other such things which are above and beyond the outlay of reputable
breeders. And, with the wind of change happening it is going to get very
much more expensive for breeders to make bad decisions or even mistakes.
It may be somewhat profitable *now*, but if I were looking for a
business in which to invest from strictly a business point of view; it
wouldn't be a puppymill!
