Hi, Barbara,
Fecal exams don't always catch coccidia (sly bugs), so if it were my
puppy, I would do five days of Albon or more. If it was really bad I
would do ten days of Albon.
I've rarely had a puppy that didn't get coccidosis. What was cultured
might not have been the problem; did your friend's vet think of that
when the treatment didn't clear this? There are dogs with levels of,
say, giardia, in dogs all the time who have *no* problem. MUCH harder
to find and count coccidia on fecal exam.
Additionally, whenever I have any problems like this I begin the dog on
Fastrack; I wouldn't be without it. It is high level probiotic and many
on this list can attest to its usefulness in these situations. I use it
when dogs are sick, stressed, or before, during and after a show.
Good luck!
