Ask your neighbour if she would contract her vet and give permission for the vet to speak to you directly about Max's ears. I'm pretty sure the vet will not be relaying the same message to you as your neighbour has. If your neighbour realizes that you will be insisting on getting "first hand information" maybe she will put a halt to her weak accusations.
