It must be the local thunderstorms that are keeping me at the keyboard! <VBG> Barb, I don't know how rare or not rare it is for a wholecolor (Bl/Tan or Ruby) to carry the for broken color as it all depends on the dogs in the pedigree, but if the Black and Tan carries the red but not broken color it can still produce a Ruby if bred to another Bl/Tan that also carries the red.
