LOL, Susan Cochran was taking a calculus exam today and her brain is fried!

It is more common for a wholecolor to NOT carry for parti than it is for a
wholecolor to carry for parti. However, a wholecolor that carries for parti
is not what I would call rare. It is sort of like saying that Rubies are
rare. There are actually a lot of Rubies, but not when you consider them
percentagewise to the other 4 colors. There are actually a lot of
wholecolors that carry for parti, but not when you compare them to the ones
that don't.

I'd say that as many as 20% of wholecolors carry for parti-- maybe more as
there has been a lot of wholecolor x parti breeding in the last few years.
However, if you purchase a wholecolor and the 3 generation pedigree shows
all wholecolor, it is unlikely (but possible) that the dog would carry for
parti. The further back in the pedigree that you have to go before you find
a parti ancestor, the less likely the dog is to carry for parti. For
example, a parti parent makes it a certainty that the dog carries a parti
gene. A parti grandparent gives maybe a 25% chance of the dog carrying for
parti. The next generation back would give a 12.5%. We are talking about the
placement of one parti in the whole pedigree. If there is more than one
parti ancestor then the odds change. (I am thinking that the risk is halved
every generation back to the parti or the known recessive, but as I
mentioned earlier, the brain is fried today so I could be off.)

All the best,
Susan Cochran
