Barb, it is more rare for a wholecolor to carry for parti than the other way around. A dominant BT is more rare than a BT which carries for red.
One way to know about the recessive genes is to look at the pedigree of the wholecolor. If you have a BT from a breeding of Ruby x BT then that BT will carry for red. A BT from several generations of BT breeding is more likely to be dominant for black, but still has the possibility of carrying for red. I can look at the colors on a pedigree and have a good idea of what the dog will produce-- not absolute but close.
