Dear Carol, I would do a test area first. I use this product frequently but did have it bleach a seat shirt once. I have used it on rugs even wool ones without a problem. I have sprayed a solution of oxyclean in stained areas and then used my carpet cleaner too remove the solution. I just use plain water in the machine when I do this.
I have used it on my dogs stained areas as well but I do have a caution. Be careful when using shampoos. I had sprayed oxyclean on the stained areas and left it to shampoo the rest of the dog. The shampoo mixed with the oxyclean and started to give of a strong ammonia smell.. The same kind of smell that used to come from hair perm solution.. I had to do a very quick rinse of my dog. I would be very cautious not to mix it with other cleaning products.
