A standard letter about this would be great. People buying puppies for others are very well-intentioned. I believe very few people would think this wasn't an absolutely wonderful, generous gift and idea. My sister wants a Persian kitten, and she mentioned to me that she might try to find one for Christmas and surprise her children (ages 10 and 14). I pointed out all the reasons why a kitten would *not* be a good idea for Christmas; i.e. life at their house is *very* hectic at that time, lots of Christmas parties, many people in and out of their home, many gifts to open, etc. etc. I told her the kitten would be overwhelmed with all the commotion and people coming in and out, and it would be a terrible time to bring a new kitten into their home. After I explained it, she agreed with me and understood completely. She had not thought of it that way at all.
I don't think people who think like this are stupid. Really, isn't it terribly generous to want to spend that kind of money on a gift? They just need to understand that a living puppy is not a gift. It's a family member, and needs to be a well thought out decision by all involved, especially the one with the responsibility for the care of the dog!
