There are REALLY detailed instructions on the site for almost any type of
install.

Your mounts all look good.  I'd guess that you just forgot to cd into a
different directory before doing the download.  I've only done stage 1
installs, but I'd guess that you want to be in /mnt/gentoo.

Gentoo is worth the effort though.  Don't give up.

You WILL want to visit the site for docs on setting up the desktop.  And
during the kernel compile, DON'T forget to build in /devfs.
