it takes a while, but its worth it! As for USE variables, all I usually do is put "pcmcia" in for my laptop, but I always put in "dvd" for my desktop. Plus I do compile KDE, as much as I dont like it, it has nice apps and menus, then compile fluxbox, which nicely inherits the kde apps.
