MDK 8.1 has some bad bugs mostly in the kernel, if you can use MDK 8.2 or better still MDK 9.0.

Both MDK 8.1 & 8.2 come with KDE 2. A great improvement over KDE 1 it had some strange bugs with getting slower and slower as time went on. After about 3 months of using it there is a noticeable slow down. KDE 3 seems faster and does not have this problem but the install of KDE3 for MDK 8.x tends to break things. It is a workable install, I am running MDK 8.2 with KDE 3 and it is great but there where a lot of configuration issues that needed to be worked at.

MDK 9.0 comes with a much improved kernel and KDE 3. I have tried MDK 9.0 and found it to be great except for development. I upgraded my wife's computer to MDK 9.0 and found it is using about 2 MB less RAM then 8.2, mostly because of the kernel.

I am running Gnome 1.4 that comes with MDK 8.2 now on my MDK 8.2 system and find it to be much much faster then KDE 2 or 3. There are many things about Gnome 1 that are very annoying, but I have to give it a chance before I go back to KDE 3. MDK 9.0 comes with Gnome 2 and has many great new features but still hangs on to the things I don't like about Gnome 1. Gnome 2 is faster then KDE 2 or 3. KDE 2 & 3 have a great selection of eye candy and I will be switching back to KDE 3 after I have learned more about Gnome.

Hey, Clugers.

First, sorry about posting a personal response to the whole board, The other
groups to which I belong only post back to the board when I hit "Reply to all"
but this is set up differently. I shall try to do better.

As soon as I get about three clear and free hours I'll have a go at the
Mandrake 8.1 install, but I have another question. I was going to use KDE as
the desktop, mainly because I'd heard more about it, but I realize the
publicity isn't everything- as evinced by Evil Uncle Bill's OS. So, from your
own perspectives which is better, KDE or Gnome... or is it just a case of what
one is used to?

TIA for the advice
