Here's my suggestion: MDK 8.1 is quite outdated now, and I had a number of problems with that OS, things you will want to avoid. I would suggest d/ling a copy of MDK 9.0, that will give you all the latest software, and will be eisier to use. I would also try installing it yourself. This will start your learning experience, and I have found that the best way to learn Linux, or any OS for that matter, is to play around with it and try to get things working yourself.
> - KDE (on the set) Both MDK 8.1 and 9.0 include KDE, although 9.0 will give you an up to date version (3.0). > - Star Office (on the set) Just make sure you choose to install the office package during installation. I think the 8.1 powerpack comes with StarOffice 5.2, the 9.0 download edition will come with openoffice which is better than StarOffice 5.2. > - an ability to fax a letter from the computer Try hylafax. I have never done this myself but I know it's possible. I'm sure there is lots of info on the web. Do a search at http://www.google.com/linux > - a working internet connection to Telus- altho I am willing to listen to > suggestions about Linux-friendly servers Well I hate Telus myself but I use them too :-). MDk will makes it pretty easy to setup a LAN connection during the install, and there are lots of GUI tools to set up a dial-up connection as well. > - an e-mail reader (in the set- altho I am used to Eudora Pro) Kmail or evolution will not be too much of a shock to the system if you are used to Eudora. > -a browser (in the set altho personally I like Opera) KDE's default browser is Konqueror, but it is a simple matter of downloading Opera if you prefer that one. > - an ability to print thru my present printer- an old Canon BJ-200e I have an old HP inkjet and MDK always finds and configures it perfectly during installation. > If any of you could suggest an individual or company that might be > interested/able to do such work, I'd be obliged. Try it out yourself, if you have problems post them to the list. If you really don't want to do it I may be able to help you out sometime in the future. Good luck, Jesse
