Rather than Shell (or perhaps in addition to), what about setting up a box that people could connect to across the web through something like TightVNC?
I know that LTSP would also MAYBE work, but we'd need to do some trickery to avoid the DHCP needs of the system. This would allow people to test out Linux as a desktop in an extremely non-comittal way. We could just have a "Click here to test Linux as a desktop" link on the CLUG page. Administratively, it shouldn't be any harder than Shell Accounts, and *I* think it would have more value for most potential users. Generally, most newbies want a GUI, not a shell.
