I agree that most newbies would want a desktop as they would not want to be
sitting in front of a shell. But isn't giving an account to any web surfer who
wants one quite a risk? First of all it would chew up a ton of bandwidth if
everyone is getting VNC access to the server (and can you say SLOW), and with a
free desktop you would have more than just potential CLUG members signing up,
and they would be able to attack the system from the inside. I would say that a
better idea would be to give away Knoppix CDs to anyone who wants to try Linux.
It has a nice GUI, it's much faster than VNC, and there is no configuration work
for the user. Just boot the CD and try Linux.
