I think the problem is your machine is overdosing on all the crack you
gave it.  What kind of honest linux (desktop) machine needs 120GB?

Seriously, I would suggest maybe working backwards, and trying old
hardware, which is a pain, but may provide some answers.  Maybe try your
old video card, and then your old cpu (tho I am guessing you prob dont
want to be swapping them around).  maybe try the old drive with the new
machine too.

if its dying hard, I would say look at hw first, but you could also try
running X w/o the nvidia binary drivers at all, just the old "nv" driver.
