I never once said it should update itself automatically. My point is the average sysadmin is too lazy or apathetic to update their own systems on a regular basis and also keep up on security fixes so that they know when they need to update their boxes. As for anti-virus, yes that updates automatically and that's not a bad thing. My mail server uses McAfee to scan email coming in and I have it updates itself everyday as McAfee releases a new DAT file everyday.
