Red Hat released a new Kernel today as an update. So I would check that one out first. If that doesn't work you may want to download the SRPM for the 8.1 kernel and rebuild it for 8.0. If you try and install just the 8.1 or Rawhide binaries though you will have to update you system first which is probably not what you want to do. But if you rebuild the kernel rpms, then you shouldn't have to update glibc and the like. (No guarantees though)
Another option for the kernel is to make you own 2.4.20 kernel. You can copy the config file for your processor from the kernel source rpm to (/usr/src/linux-2.4/configs/ directory) and use it as ".config" file for 2.4.20. Then by running "make oldconfig", make will prompt you for any new options or changes in kernel features. Of Course, you can load it into "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" as well.
