They have been know to have memory leaks from time to time. From the sounds of your random crashes, I am definitely thinking that something is leaking memory.
The only thing is that some opengl screensavers crash my machine as well. It's got a ATI Rage Pro 128 and I have update to newest drivers from DRI which didn't make a difference. I know if a screensaver crashes my machine, I just remove it from the list of random screeensavers. You know it could be just a bad screensaver...
