Hmmm, I don't think I'm getting all the messages on the list -- at least not
in a timely manner. :-( I got Shawn's mail, but not Jarrod's. 8-0

Pardon me while I reply to Jarrod's e-mail:

Heheh. It took me quite awhile to get HL working (using WINE, of course)
but it can be done, and one can get great frame rates as well. I've met
players using Slackware, Debian, and Gentoo, in particular. (I think I've
met a couple of RH/Mandrake users, but (sorry to say) those distros usually
aren't stable enough to game very well. Please no flames, I'm speaking only
from a gaming perspective. If you're a successful RH/Mandrake gamer (at
least under WINE), prove me wrong by posting your success stories.) :-D

As far as dedicated server requirements go, it's usually largely
CPU-dependent (correct me if I'm wrong for other games, but I'm coming from
having hosted dedicated HL servers). Lotsa memory doesn't hurt either.
This is because the shooting is all calculated (especially Half-Life which
still uses a hit-scan engine), which takes up cycles. But network bandwidth
usually isn't such a big deal (and not at all on a LAN). It's usually the
latency (upstream bandwidth on DSL/Cable) and routing that kills. Bad frame
rates don't help. Also, bots will chew cycles like... well, bots. :-P So,
in general, the bigger the CPU and memory you can get, the better off you'll
be.

On a personal note, I have Half-Life and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
(MOHAA). I would be willing to consider purchasing a new game, but only if
I knew I'd get online longevity out of it (unlike MOHAA). Unfortunately,
this biggest deciding factor for me is hardware -- I don't have any cash for
anything new, and my PIII 450MHz/32MB ATI All-in-Wonder are getting kinda
long in the teeth.

Majority rules, though. I'm not pushing for anything; I'm just excited.
:-) I've placed my vote, and if I don't have whatever wins, I'll see what I
can do about it. Worst case, I'm still coming to help tweak and maybe steal
a round or two off somebody else's comp. :-D

Curtis.

P.S. I also have a second NIC to lend if necessary. Could save on Shawn's
pristine SMC. :-)

I have a brand new SMC NIC (the box still has the plastic wrapping on it -
unopened) that I'd be willing to donate for the server if needed.... (I'd
like it back afterwards though - I'm treating it as a backup in case my
DLinks fail).

Thought that might get a few eyeballs. I'm curious as to how you got
Half-Life
to run under Linux. I didn't add it originally as I didn't think it could, I

stand corrected. Would RTCW be good enough for you Curtis? It's still in the

whole WWII vein. I suspect we would have fewer problems with it. I am
probably getting ahead of myself, we need to see what folks want to play.

I have a wish-list item for the event, that is a dedicated Game server. If
you
have such a box or some components that could go into such a box (for the
event only) please contact me. Hell, I'm not even sure what the specs should

be. I guess it depends on whether we are playing something
brand-spanking-new
or not.
