For those who are interested, you can find some HOW-TOs for running HL under WINE here:
http://lhl.linuxgames.com/ It definitely did not work out of the box for me. :-P The launcher menus are very slow to re-draw, you have to move your mouse off of each menu item after clicking (don't ask me why, but it exists in Windows too -- just not as slow or obvious), and HL complains about not finding MCI drivers (for audio) at startup, although the audio does work. But once you are in-game, all is well. :-D Honestly, though, it's been awhile since I've used it under Linux. I tried recently, but it was too much work and I didn't have it done in time for a LAN party (hehe - my first one). Here are the details on my implementation, though. A lot of them will still be relevant for (almost anything) running under WINE: -Before you start, make sure you have the latest Mesa and the latest drivers for your 3D hardware installed and working. I use GLTron to test. ;-) -First, I compiled WINE from source using the make; make dep && make install process because I needed to specify the --with-opengl option (not sure if that is the exact option -- not using Linux right now). Wineinstall didn't give me the option, so I didn't get 3D hardware OpenGL support the first time around. :-( -Drives: I had a FAT32 partition with the game installed on it, and defined a D: drive to that /mnt partition. But it didn't work very well (write access to FAT as user didn't work. If anyone has any suggestions how to cleanly give a user read/write to a FAT partition, please let me know.) So I used an (ext3) E: drive in /usr/local/games, and had no problems (I probably used chmod 777, but chmod 666 should do). One outstanding issue I had back in the day was changing to full screen, but that may be solved with XFree 4.1.0 or 4.3.0. Does anybody else have any experience with this (or other FPS games under WINE)? The workaround was to provide the -win option to Half-Life which runs in a window. It wasn't bad, just different. If anyone else has any tips or stories, I'd love to hear them. I'm going to have to get it running again soon, and I may need help. ;-) Curtis. -----Original Message----- From: Jarrod Major [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 1:45 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: (clug-talk) InstallFest & GameFest -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 On Thursday 06 March 2003 1:29 pm, you wrote: Thought that might get a few eyeballs. I'm curious as to how you got Half-Life to run under Linux. I didn't add it originally as I didn't think it could, I stand corrected. Would RTCW be good enough for you Curtis? It's still in the whole WWII vein. I suspect we would have fewer problems with it. I am probably getting ahead of myself, we need to see what folks want to play. I have a wish-list item for the event, that is a dedicated Game server. If you have such a box or some components that could go into such a box (for the event only) please contact me. Hell, I'm not even sure what the specs should be. I guess it depends on whether we are playing something brand-spanking-new or not. > I loved InstallFest and I am looking forward to attending any/all CLUG > InstallFests that I possibly can. > > That being said, GameFest makes me even more excited. :-) Wow, Linux + > FPS LAN party -- I think I might explode (at least, when shot). ;-) Not > pretty for Jarrod's house tho', methinks. ;-) > > Man, I am super stoked about the idea.
