I would recommend taking it with you. At the security check point do not let it go through the x-ray machine (yes, I know that there are signs at most of the security stations stating that the x-ray machines will not damage computers or camera's, and if only subjected to a short term in the machine, they are fine. However, if the operator stops the machine for a closer look at either your items, or the items before or after yours, it could be in there for an extended time. That is what hurts them). You can request that they do a physical inspection of the unit instead of going through the x-ray (this applies to any electronic item). The only possible hassle that you could get, is they may insist that they need to verify it is in working condition (this comes from increased security measures since 9/11). As long as all the factory seals are in place, there shouldn't be a problem

2 concerns on a serious note...

Some airports use x-ray scanners, I dont know if thats an issue or not.

Carrying it on might not be allowed, if you have to put it in your bag it
might get tossed around.

As for altitude, the cabin is pressurized and temperature regulated, not too
sure if the same can be said for the cargo hold though...

If they allow it, Id definately carry it on, then youve got no worries...

I have taken a suitcase FULL (every inch) of electronic gear. Not a problem, open it let them swab a few things for trace chemicals you're done.
