I figured it out.  What I had to do was remove the dependent package xlib-dev and it's dependencies.  I noticed a lot of cruft that is installed onto the system so now the clean up.  I guess the issue was that some packages did play well together.  Thanks for your help Jesse. It should also give you some kind of version information so you can try installing it manually.
