I've never had trouble with MyMacDealer. I deal with Tom Aman, he is much younger than the rest and by far the best person to deal with. Good idea getting a PowerBook -- I know that I am never switching back ;)

Jacob,

For Apple stuff, I've found Westworld Computers (www.westworld.ca)
decent, they definitely know their stuff and their prices are really
good. They're in the 1000 block of Center St (North) and parking is
limited. There's another Mac dealer called MyMacDealer, but they're not
exactly the best in the (western) world. I have experience with both,
if you want to hear more, feel free to contact me off-list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Of course, there are other places that carry Apple
products, but they're in a boat similar to MyMacDealer's (I have a list
of addresses).
**Note: There will (probably) be a MacWorld conference in June or July
which means that hardware prices may drop (my guess is ~20%) and
hardware will be updated (think: G5 PowerBooks). If you're lucky, you
may be able to get a [cheap] upgrade after Jobs' keynote.

Now I'm curious to find out more about these dealers. I am already decided
that my next computer will be a PowerBook, once I have the money saved. :-)
As a beginning exercise, I visited MyMacDealer and Westworld, as they were
the only two places I knew of that sell Apple in town (other than Compusmart,
which was out of the running years ago based on my prior experiences there).
I found MyMacDealer to be very friendly, though perhaps a little
condescending, even after I explained that I'm a Linux geek, which should
clue any salesman into the fact that I probably know what I'm talking about.
Westworld, well, I was there for an hour before anyone even talked to me, and
when I gave Standard Customer Response #1, "Well, I'm just looking at the
moment", the guy said "Ok", and walked away. Didn't offer to tell me
anything about the machines or anything. Guess he wasn't eager to make a
sale. I've also been lurking around Mac website forums, and I've seen
several references to both places being overpriced (in their software and
accessories - the cost of the machines is generally non-negotiable). I'd
rather buy my system from a local dealer, so if anything goes wrong, I have
someone to talk to (and to keep some money in our community, supporting local
jobs, etc), but so far things aren't looking good. :-)

Thoughts?

Ian
