Well, I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but have you tried disabling sendmail temporarily and see if it alleviates the boot pause and/or the login failure? Some straightforward troubleshooting by eliminating the variables. I'm not really versed in Red Hat anymore, so I'm sorry I can't be of more specific help. As an afterthought, is your system up-to-date in terms of security patches?
