I have to agree here. A while back, I recall having a sendmail issue
that made sendmail appear to take a while to load at bootup, and at
other points of execution.

My issue was related to name reoslution.

It came down to (in my case) that the system didn't have a fully
qualified domain name. And it was fixed by adding one to /etc/hosts .
