Hi folks,

My RedHat 8 system has two startup issues. I haven't
been able to figure out what is going on.

1. during the normal cold startup cycle, the
startup pauses on sendmail and sm-client for a long
time (4+minutes). I'm only using mail for internal
accounts on the box and I clear out /var/spool/mail
regularly. I'm running the defaul sendmail config
that came with RH8 and it used to blast through that
startup in seconds.

Well, I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but have you tried disabling sendmail temporarily and see if it alleviates the boot pause and/or the login failure? Some straightforward troubleshooting by eliminating the variables.

I'm not really versed in Red Hat anymore, so I'm sorry I can't be of more specific help.

As an afterthought, is your system up-to-date in terms of security patches?

HTH,
Curtis

*puts his newbie hat on*
I've never patched linux before, how do you do it? Do you just grab the rpm's or source and install? are there specific security patches?
