sorry again - didn't mean to inflict pain.
However, I believe this was an inadvertent post of a private message to the
list.
yep
Having been guilty of fumble fingers myself, I can understand the
slip.
as always Shawn: you are gracious and kind
With regards to the comments, most of the points were discussed at the after
meeting meeting last night, including the state of the progsig. What didn't
come out is that the group made the choice, as a group, to be an informal
gathering for now. As the "defacto" leader of the group, I respect this
choice, and will continue to follow the wishes of the group. I use the term
"defacto" here rather loosely - the group exists because I stepped up and
organized the meetings, then the group gave me their support through a series
of emails to be the leader (as opposed to an election), the group has not
expressed dissatisfaction with the job I've been doing, and more importantly,
no one else has stepped forward to say they want the job.
that's fair - the progsig example may be an entirely different situation
and therefore may not be representative.
A comment was made regarding my organizational skills. I think the fact that
the Programming SIG exists, and the fact we had a qmail workshop speak to
this. Not to metion the next workshop (for Apache) has been discussed and
will like happen before May.
I was harsh - organizational skills are (like so many things) relative.
And they aren't the end-all and be-all. To paraphrase Marcel: It's more
important to be inclusive and transparent, than to be organizationally
efficient. You are indeed a worthy candidate.
As for the rest of the message, Neils raises some good points. I had the
opportunity to discuss this with him last night, and have an idea of the
concerns he has, and the direction he would like to see the group move.
With regards to Neils' message this morning (around 6:30am), I agree with most
of the points, and am a little disappointed these topics haven't been talked
about more (yet) on the list.
I was starting to wonder as well, if anyone cared. But maybe the better
explanation is, that this is a group of very nice people, who really
don't want to upset anyone or cause conflict (I sure blew that one,
didn't I?). For example, the fact, that so many people have been in
office by acclamation would seem to evidence that. The fact, that no-one
seemed to dare to offer a second nomination for president at the meeting
seemed to point that way, too. It was only after a small group including
Jesse, you and I had our conversation after the meeting, and I bounced
some of my ideas around, that Jesse thought it might be a good idea to
nominate me - after all he hadn't nominated anyone for at least 20
minutes before that :) [inside joke hopefully understood by everyone,
who was at Wednesday's meeting].
I like the idea of the CLUG website becoming a
resource for professionals and serious enthusiasts, but also feel this has to
be balanced with newbie type resources.
fully agreed; the only trick is, that newbies can only be helped by
seasoned guns; seasoned guns don't stick around for long, unless there's
continuing value for them, too. And we've seen the fading away of too
many of the group's founding generation. It's a huge loss to the group
and the question is, if we can get them back. I sure hope so.
After being nominated last night, I decided I would need to do some deep
thought, and decide if I would be a "placeholder" until a visionary unseats
me (should I be elected), or if I had my own vision that I would like to
implement. I don't like the idea of being a bench warmer, but would like a
few more days to firm up my vision, and give some thought to how to
accomplish it. I had every intention of making my views known sometime next
week so the group could consider my "platform" - for lack of better terms -
prior to the AGM.
great - I'm looking forward to it.
Neils, no offense taken - as we talked about last night. If I'm elected, I
hope I'll have the chance to disabuse you of your view of me as a
leader... :)
I'd love nothing better !
That said though, I say this to the group at large:
Nothing get's done until someone steps up and does what is needed. Thus far,
I'm only aware of a few members of the group who will do this when needed.
Will you step up?
I'm convinced, if more members are given the opportunity in the right
atmosphere of openness, many will be excited to participate and
contribute in a variety of ways. There are so many cool (or is that
kewl?) and interesting things we can do.
