I do not share the same perspective on security as Steve Gibson. The man is a genius to be sure, but his idea of a "stealthy" machine is very very wrong. This is incidentally the short short short answer. The site is not a bad starting point for checking out your security, but it does not go deep enough to be truly useful. > This is for a home network so right now there is the router after the > cable modem plus another router upstairs to supply the wireless for > my notebook and one computer and to do wired service to two other > systems. In spite of this, I do recommend running your mail server, there is no better teacher than experience. > systems in the Pentium IV 2.5/2.8 + 1 to 1.5GB RAM range that I'm > assuming would work for this. In fact there has been no change when compared to the new AMD dual core machine in terms of network or samba performance. > especially for the file server. It sounds like samba is what you are after. I use samba to do exactly what you are after, to share movies and audio files. I connect to the samba machine from both Linux and Windows. > > I guess I'll try putting all the pieces together and see what I've > got.
