I do not share the same perspective on security as Steve Gibson.
The man is a genius to be sure, but his idea of a "stealthy" machine is
very very wrong.  This is incidentally the short short short answer.
The site is not a bad starting point for checking out your security, but
it does not go deep enough to be truly useful.

You may not be able to host your own email server at home unless you
upgrade to a more commercial connection, thus obliterating the cost
savings.  In spite of this, I do recommend running your mail server,
there is no better teacher than experience.

These are overkill.  Until recently my file server was a PIII 1Ghz with
1 Gig of RAM and a GigE NIC.  I did not upgrade to improve network
performance.  In fact there has been no change when compared to the new
AMD dual core machine in terms of network or samba performance.

It sounds like samba is what you are after.  I use samba to do exactly
what you are after, to share movies and audio files.  I connect to the
samba machine from both Linux and Windows.
