I'm in the minority in that I use Slackware, Maemo(based on Debian) and Slax... Rather than re-installing I would try to reboot into a console (no Xwindows, use an emergency disk if you have one, or the install CD if you don't) and repair it. It will be a gigantic pain in the #$@; but in the end you will gain valuable insight...
