I have used many distros over the years. To be honest, most are pretty
good. The first distro that clicked with me was Debian, and my favorite
~ Desktop Environment is KDE, so it is not surprising that KUbuntu is my
personal choice.

Having said that, I would choose a distro that has a lot of local users,
since this list is likely going to be your second stop for help and
support (google should become your first :)

~From what I can see, the Debian and Ubuntu distros have a lot of local
users and should be "safe" choices. Also, I know a number of Fedora
users so that is not bad choice either. There are also a few Gentoo
people so that should also be a viable alternative alongside Mandriva.

By comparison there are only two of us who have significant Slackware
experience, and only one of the two is still a passionate user. This is
not to say that it is not a fine distro, but when you run into problems
(you will regardless of the distro you choose), it could be a more
difficult to get help.

Given that you already have some experience with Debian, I would either
stay with Debian or try one of the Ubuntu variants.

In a perfect world you would have the time to try as many distros as you
can, and then choose the one that you "clicked" with.
