Hi Gustin, Many thanks for your extensive and informative reply! It confirmed what I had already thought-- I should stick with the Debian "family".
In an earlier email you wrote that you had been able to get vuescan to work "out of the box". I wonder if that is because you had a different processor than me (I have an amd64) rather than a different distro. All the best.
