I like to use Postfix + MailScanner + ClamAV + Spamassasin +
Squirrelmail, and love it. a bit of effort to get going, but once set
up, it's bullet proof

One thing to look out for, is most e-mail servers reject mail from
dynamically assigned IP address blocks, Especially those from Shaw, I've
also noticed a few servers will reject mail if there is no reverse DNS.

<rant> The only thing all the anti-spam measures have seem to
accomplished is to make it harder to send legitimate mail </rant>

You'll need to have a SOHO account from Shaw with 2 static IP addresses,
and have them set up a reverse DNS for your mail server. (You'll need to
call their tech support with a request once the forward DNS to your
server works)

There may be workarounds, (bouncing mail off smart hosts, etc) but if
not done the right way (read *strictly* RFC compliant e-mail server) I
will guarantee that at some point you will run afoul of somebody's spam
filters, or find yourself on a blacklist.

Setting it up properly will likely be more expensive than what you get
now, and definitely more expensive than G-mail

The SOHO account from Shaw costs around 100 bucks per month (check their
business internet site to be sure)

If this is for a business or for "I have my own mail server" purposes
and you are fairly tech savvy with *nix mail systems I'd say go for it,

Otherwise use gmail. they will host your e-mail domain (for free) and it
is easier for those less technically inclined to set up and maintain.

my 2 cents.
