Solution is to boot with a live CD. Get a console and run lsmod|grep ata,
this will list the modules needed. Then chroot the harddrive and edit
/etc/modules.conf that is the file that the Mandriva version of mkinitrd
uses. There are lines in there that tell the system modules to use, change
them to the new modules. Then run mkinitrd as normal. I don't know if
reinstalling the MBR for GRUB is needed but I did that last and when I
rebooted things were back to normal.
