Windows can be hard. Using the driver disk that it came with, there was a bug in the nVidia drivers (the chipset ones) so that if I left the sound mixer applet open it fills up the registry, once it hits its maximum size windows behaves oddly. Why the sound applet writes to the registry is beyond me.
Anyway, By comparison 64Studio 3.0 beta just flies on this computer, it installed in less than 15 minutes and was immediately usable (even the nVidia video card worked using the open source nv driver) while Windows 7 was noticeably sluggish and still required a couple of hours to get the drivers and software installed. The system specs are still pretty decent, AMD FX-60, 3 GB RAM, and a WS veloci-raptor 10K rpm hard drive. The point of all of this is that I know my 70 year old Dad could install Ubuntu and configure it and then start using it without any intervention from me. I also know that this is not possible with any current or impending version of Windows. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAkpqIZIACgkQwRXgH3rKGfPWoQCeM22m0tlwOnKl/PHnKNSyz87M h3wAn3ckc6mhmYY79FGQdB9p8bDPOCcp =tO/+ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [email protected] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
