Most laptops I've seen with a touch pad has a simple key combo to turn it on or off. On mine it is the blueish "Fn" key and the F7 key. So, Fn-F7 does the trick for me. This seems to be pretty standard, but I have seen the combo missing on some older models, or on a different key.

The graphic sybol on my F7 key is a blue square with a small hand touching it.

How does one disable the built in mouse pad so that I use only the

You can remove 'HAL' devices with the command:
hal-device -r <udi>

You can find the <udi> by just using 'hal-device' and parsing the output,
the <udi> will look something like:
'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_logicaldev_input_2'

There may be a way of making a blacklist in HAL too...
