I did a hal-device command and got a few pages of output. I remember
hearing the term "parsing" before but I have forgotten the command to do
it. using the command

hal-device -r <di> may be doubly dangerous because it may remove all hal
devices and with -r it will do it recursively . So I presume that what
you mean by the command hal-device -r <udi> is to replace "hal-dev" with
the particular name of my hal-dev, in your case, logicaldev_input_2.

So until I can learn how to parse the output of the hal-device command I
will wait for more guidance before using an unknown command in possibly
a too general way and causing myself unnecessary grief.

Thanks for your help so far,

Michael

I might be interested in that option too.
