I do not remember when this change was made, but 8.04 does not have the .conf at the end of the filename. It is just a naming difference, the files do the same thing.

Test to see if removing the module does what you want. sudo rmmod psmouse IF there are no negative side effects and the onboard touchpad has been disabled, then you can add the psmouse to the list of blacklisted modules.
