Sure, the hardest problem is going to be figuring out how to use the
damn things (I have found two USR external modems, so at least I don't
have to worry about drivers).

Probably just go with Linux, minicom, and the good 'ol atdt command :)
 It turns out I have forgotten everything I knew about PPP and SLIP.
