We do the same.
I work on a short term skilled unit. We pull names for the staff that are scheduled for Christmas Day and New Year's Day. If the census is low, the first drawn name can have the day off if they want. It is better to have adequate staff scheduled and give the day off then to try to find someone to work.
We also put up a list to see what day someone would prefer to work. We also check last years schedule to see who worked.
If you allow vacation during this time, you may be short if someone gets the flu or have to be off for other reasons. This year we had two RN's and one LPN off. One had broken foot and the other two had surgery.
I do not have to work holiday's of weekends.
