I, also, worked at a facility that gave all holidays off by seniority, and they also mandated the staff for overtime, frequently. There were some nurses [LPN and RN ] that  did not have a holiday off in over seven years; and, to make it even worse, the senior staff was allowed to take off vacation time during holidays. The low seniority staff always got the raw end of this deal. Oh, by the way, this facility has a tremendous turnover in staff. I wonder why?
I think that working every other holiday is the fairest way.  If you work
Christmas this year you get it off next year.  We don't prohibit taking
vacation at anytime of year as long as staffing permits.  I have a friend
that works in a facility that you get holidays off by seniority, and I think
its unfair.  she has been there over 5 years and hasn't had a Christmas with
her son and husband yet.  That, I thinks is unfair.  If there is someone
that will swap holidays with you that's great, but the fairest was is to be
on one off one. We also usually give the person working the holiday their
preference of what day they want off around the holiday.

We do the same - we have had that in our personnel policy for many years -
people will get use to it.

We are trying to be fair to staff and cover resident needs.
 
However, some are now grumbling and want to change.
 
How do you all handle the Christmas holiday and vacations etc.??
