Can you determine the reason for his refusal?   Some residents are afraid of water, the whirling water in the whirlpool is frightening.  Some have never had a shower in their lives, so that is not an attractive alternative.  For the sponge bath problem, sometimes it is just too cold for a resident to feel comfortable having a bath.  Have you tried turning up the heat and giving him a bath under a warm bath blanket?
A lot of older folks were not used to bathing daily, so this is a new idea to them.  They can't see the sense in it, especially since they are not doing manual labor.  You will have a more difficul time determining the real issue without family input.  Lots of luck.

Subject: what to do

Does anyone have any suggestions in how to get a resident to take a shower, bath or just plain wash up. I have a resident who is totally against anytype of bathing . He becomes very belligerent toward staff. Psych, consult is ordered. He has no family , only guardianship with family services.
